Air Baltic

THE flight: Air Baltic flight BT652 from London Gatwick’s South terminal to Riga, Latvia. Departing 13.10, arriving 17.50.

the CHECK-IN: Gatwick was reasonably quiet for a change and there was only a moderate queue at check-in. The wait wasn’t long and I was soon through a relatively empty security channel too.

THE seat: The seat pitch was fairly standard but a fresh, modern-looking cabin was pleasing to the eye. The cabin was close to full capacity and it was a bit of a struggle to find overhead luggage storage space.

The service: A couple of immaculately dressed crew who at first appeared a little surly soon lost their ice-cool demeanour when one struggled with the life jacket during the safety briefing. Much to the amusement of passengers, a fit of giggles was transmitted over the intercom as her colleague looked on and did her best to continue the talk-through.

THE entertainment: An average inflight magazine kept me occupied for all of ten minutes, plus there was a duty free shopping catalogue. A mobile entertainment unit is available for hire in the economy cabin, while drinks and snacks are available to buy from an inflight menu – prices are reasonable.

A meal and drinks are served as standard in the business class cabin.

THE arrival: Touched down five minutes ahead of schedule in Riga and quickly proceeded through security, only to have
to wait a while for the luggage carousel to grind into action.

THE verdict: A smart airline, modern in appearance, operating a punctual service and hosted by efficient (if a little icy!) staff. With a two cabin configuration it might not technically fall into low-cost carrier territory, but that’s what the overall ambience of the flight experience emanates.

THE details: Air Baltic flies daily from London Gatwick to Riga in Latvia. Return fares start from as little as 100 euros including taxes when booked well in advance. See www.airbaltic.com
