American Airlines, Business Class

THE FLIGHT: American Airlines AA125 inaugural flight from London Stansted to New York JFK. Boeing 767-300, seating 30 in Business Class in a 2-2-2 configuration.

THE CHECK-IN: Dedicated check-in for Business Class with an additional security screening before reaching check-in desk. Check-in was swift although a little unnerving – I’ve never been asked for my next-of-kin’s name and contact details before. After check-in I was escorted through Fast Track security.

THE LOUNGE: A temporary dedicated lounge was comfortable and well-stocked. Constant announcements for departing aircraft at the nearby gate were rather annoying. The lounge has complimentary wifi and two computer terminals. A new lounge is being built close to the gate, offering more comprehensive facilities and direct access to the aircraft.

THE SEAT: The ‘flat at an angle seat’ was very comfortable and easily adjusted. There’s an in-seat power outlet, interlocking tray tables – giving room to work and dine/drink – and privacy dividers. The seat has a memory selection enabling you to return your favourite position during the flight. Storage was fine, although the centre seats have less storage than those by the window. Seats convert to 76 inches when flat and have a 59-inch pitch.

THE SERVICE: A choice of drinks were offered before departure, as well as amenity kits and headphones. There was a limited selection of newspapers available. A three-course meal offered several different choices at each stage. My in-flight meal had been mistakenly ordered as vegetarian, but the cabin crew were able to find a meat option instead. A good selection of wines, spirits, Champagne, beer and liqueurs were available.

THE ENTERTAINMENT: A personal video and audio visual unit with 10.6-inch screen offered a good range of on-demand entertainment. Bose noise-cancelling headphones were provided, although these prevented you hearing any onboard announcements. A comprehensive selection of 14 movies, ten hours of pre-loaded TV programmes, games and over 50 music CDs were available.

THE arrival: We landed on schedule at JFK. The gate was around a 15 minute walk to passport control and baggage reclaim. Airlines are not allowed premium passenger arrival areas so we had to queue with everyone else for passport clearance which took some time.

THE VERDICT: An enjoyable experience.
The new seat and in-flight entertainment system were very good indeed, and the meal options would satisfy most palates. The
new American Airlines terminal at JFK for departing passengers is a big plus, with dedicated areas for premium passengers – including kerb-side check-in – and premium passenger security lanes.
